Contemporary Fusion
Built behind an old cordial factory, the client brief was to capture the rustic charm of the building whilst creating a contemporary space using materials sympathetic to the character of the historic structure. Given the narrow nature of the site, design and forward planning were vital to ensure that all landscape elements came together for a cohesive result.
Using materials recycled from the site, and incorporating them into the landscape a link was created between the modern built environment and the existing structure.
The chunky large format Wharf decking is a nod to the structural timbers of the old factory and the recycling of original bricks into elements of the garden continue that link.
The contrast of the lighter tones of the Travertine paving and the modern look of the cypress batten screen contemporise the space, yet still complement the older elements of the garden.
A minimalist planting scheme was implemented to soften the perimeter without dominating the environment.
